Description For the vertically challenged, the Teensy 4.1 Low Profile is assembled with very short low profile male header pins and shipped along with the mating low profile female header sockets for installation into a PCB. This header arrangement allows for a minimal installed height of the Teensy 4.1 for fitting into low profile enclosures or fitting under something such as an LCD for a compact layout. It is available as either the standard Teensy DEV-18A-LP which has Ethernet capability or the Teensy NE (No Ethernet) DEV-18A NE-LP which does not have Ethernet capability. This version of Teensy 4.1 is built to order and will typically ship in 1 or 2 business days. Please Note: The short 2.54mm male header pins prevents this version of Teensy 4.1 from plugging into a standard solderless breadboard. These are typically used with a custom PCB or solder type proto board with the matching mating female sockets that we supply. The male header pin are 2.54mm (0.1″) long with a gold flash and have a 2.5mm (0.1″) tall plastic body. When these headers are stacked, the combined height is about 6.1mm (0.24″) compared to 11mm for the standard length header/socket combo. This saves about 5mm (0.19″ in height as shown in the picture below. Even with a relatively short contact area, the headers mate with a solid mechanical and electrical connection. Low Profile Header Comparison to Standard Header The total stack-up from the baseboard to the top of the Teensy USB connector which is the highest point on the Teensy is 10.6mm as shown below. Low Profile Header Stack-up with Teensy Note: The picture shows spring-loaded POGO pins connecting to the USB pads on the bottom of the Teensy so that the USB can be routed to the edge of the board since the Teensy will be inaccessible in this particular application. In this case, it also allowed the USB connector type to be converted to USB-C. A good POGO pin height for use with these headers is 7.5mm. Due to their short plastic bodies, the female headers may have a slight bow to them. The plastic housing has a memory, so you cannot just bend them straight before soldering. For best pin alignment, be sure to press the connector flat during soldering. This is usually easiest if a pin or two on one end is soldered into the board and then the far end of the connector is pressed against the board while soldering a pin or two on that end before soldering the rest of the pins. Alternatively the female headers can be preinstalled onto the pins on the Teensy to help hold them flat and then soldered in as an assembly.
