This volume brings together Venus and Adonis, The Rape of Lucrece, The Phoenix and the Turtle, The Passionate Pilgrim, and A Lover’s Complaint. The introduction situates the two long narrative poems within classical and Renaissance European traditions and considers similar issues for The Phoenix and the Turtle. The Passionate Pilgrim is presented as a miscellany of twenty sonnets and lyrics, of which only five can be securely attributed to Shakespeare. Editor John Roe examines the circumstances of the collection’s production and weighs the evidence for and against Shakespeare’s authorship of A Lover’s Complaint, as well as the much-debated question of its genre. Throughout, he shows how Shakespeare, in his handling of formal rhetorical tropes, fashions a vivid and flexible poetic language characteristic of the best Elizabethan writing.
