Helena, the low‑born daughter of a deceased physician, is in love with the young nobleman Bertram, who does not return her feelings. After curing the King of France using her inherited medical knowledge, she is allowed to choose a husband and boldly selects Bertram. He rejects the match and flees to the wars in Italy, setting Helena seemingly impossible conditions she must fulfil before he will acknowledge her. The play blends comedy, romance and a darker examination of marriage, class, honour and female agency.
